The 2008 Accenture Match Play Championship teeing off next week is one of the biggest golfing highlights of the year. Unlike conventional tournament play which allows the top players to recover from poor rounds of golf and still win the tournament, match play requires perfect focus on a day by day basis.
The unique challenge of the Accenture Match Play Championships is clearly illustrated by the tournaments history. In nine years of competition only one player has been able to successfully defend his title, and that was Tiger Woods in 2004. This pattern does not bode well for 2007 Accenture Match Play Championships winner Henrik Stenson, who won his title without having to face any of the tournaments top seeds. He did, however, take the title by beating Tiger Woods nemesis, Australian Nick OHearn.
As the 13th seed, Henrik Stenson will be teeing off his first round match against another Australian today, the 52 seed Robert Allenby. Whilst Stenson shouldnt have much difficulty disposing of the Australian the rampant form of Tiger Woods does not auger well for Stensons prospects .
With Tiger Woods having won 8 of his last 9 tournaments, its unlikely that Stenson will become only the second player in Accenture Match Play Championships history to defend his title.
